ST. PAUL—The Bethel University men's basketball team picked up a much-needed road win over Macalester College Saturday afternoon in St. Paul. The Royals' (14-6, 9-6 MIAC) 83-62 victory over the Scots (3-18, 1-15 MIAC) snapped a two-game road skid and kept BU just a game and a half out of second place. The 21-point triumph was equally good because of Macalester's recent play—nearly upsetting Saint John's and St. Thomas in the last week.
The weekend matinee wasn't a blow out early in the second half. In fact, Bethel led by just two with 17:21 left on the clock. A 12-2 run over the next three minutes gave the Royals some breathing room, however, and BU was able to coast to a decisive victory at the Leonard Center.
Bethel dominated the paint Saturday, outscoring Macalester 50-28 inside. Additionally, BU's bench outscored the Scots 27-11. Finally, one other place the Royals outscored Macalester was in fast break points (14-0).
The Royals finished the day shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from downtown, and 90 percent from the foul line.
Bridgeport Tusler led the team with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the free throw line. Tusler also finished with four assists and two steals
Trevor Hall recorded 14 points and four assists after making 6-of-7 field goals attempted.
Kyle von_Schmidt-Pauli also poured in 14 points, alongside four rebounds.
Tim Hanson and
Derek Magnuson combined for 12 points, 17 rebounds, and three steals.
Bethel will take on Augsburg College in Minneapolis on Monday night at 7 p.m. The Royals will try and get redemption on the Auggies, as it was Augsburg that snapped BU's 15-game home winning streak earlier this season.
