BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team hosted the defending national champion University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the Pointers showed why they are still the No. 1-ranked team with a 5-2 victory over the Royals. One night after defeating a previously undefeated UW-Stout team the Royals were unable to make it two in a row over Wisconsin foes. UWSP fired 56 shots on the night, 51 of which were stopped by
Jesse Garcia.
The Royals came out strong, outshooting the Pointers over the first ten minutes of the game but UWSP struck first with a goal at 11:42 in the first period. They would build on their lead from there with another goal three minutes later and a third early in the second period. A Pointers power play late in the second period resulted in their fourth goal. Bethel was able to get on the board with a power play goal of their own before the end of the second period.
Jackson Purvis converted with assists from
Michael Bond and
Dallas Marvin. UW-Stevens Point scored their fifth goal just 40 seconds into the third period. Bethel's second power play goal came from
Jeff Flicker, unassisted, at 14:14.
Bethel will now turn their attention to the opening weekend of MIAC play as they will take on the Saint Mary's University Cardinals. The Royals will travel to Winona on Friday and will host the Cardinals on Saturday night.
