WINONA, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team fell just short in their opening MIAC game of the season, a 2-1 defeat at Saint Mary's University. The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period but Bethel battled back, getting within one mid-way through the second period but were just unable to find the equalizer.
Joe Sheppard made 41 saves in net for Bethel to keep the Royals in striking distance.
Justin Bonanno scored his fifth goal of the year for the Royals with the assist coming from
Nick Eytcheson. The Bonanno goal came on a power play, one of just three the Royals had on the night, compared to six for Saint Mary's. Both teams converted once on the power play with SMU's other goal coming at even strength.
The Royals and Cardinals will face off again on Saturday night, this time in Bethel University Arena at 7 p.m.
