ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Bethel University's football team travels to Minneapolis this weekend to take on Augsburg College in their second-to-last game of the 2016 campaign. The Royals (3-5, 3-3 MIAC) hope to put an end to their two-game skid against the Auggies (2-7, 2-5 MIAC), whose only two wins this year have come against Carleton and St. Olaf. Augsburg topped BU 62-61 in a snowy shootout two years ago and then scored 21 unanswered points in last year's 49-42 result.
Â
The Royals hold a 23-15-3 record aginst the Auggies all-time, including a 16-game win streak that ended in 2014. Bethel comes into Saturday's game with three wins in their last five contests, with both losses coming against teams ranked in the Top 10 nationwide.Â
Â
BU put up 413 yards against the University of St. Thomas—a team that had the No. 4-ranked defense coming into the game (210.0 yards per game)—thanks to 276 yards passing and 137 yards rushing. The Royals are averaging 457.0 yards and 33.1 points per game, which marks the first time since 2013—the year Bethel reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Playoffs—that they have averaged over 450.0 yards per game.Â
A signifiant portion of BU's offense is run through wide receiver
Bryce Marquardt, who hauled in eight passes for 142 yards and one touchdown last Saturday against the Tommies. Marquardt became just the second wide receiver to tally 140 or more receiving yards against UST since 2008. He now has 51 receptions for 879 yards and eight touchdowns this season. Marquardt is ranked No. 7 nationwide in receiving yards per game (125.6) and is just one touchdown shy of tying Bethel's all-time record for career receiving TDs (25).Â
Bethel's defense is led by outside linebacker
Dawson Brown and middle linebacker
Andrew Ragsdale. Brown leads the team in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, and interceptions. Meanwhile,
Andrew Ragsdale has totalled 46 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, in the last five games.
