WINONA, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team was unable to hold onto a 2-1 lead and ended up settling for a 2-2 tie on the road against Saint Mary's University. The Royals were unable to complete the series sweep after a big 6-2 victory the night before.
Wendy Roberts and
Megan O'Brian scored Bethel's goals while
Maggie Straka made 28 saves in net.
Similar to Friday night's game most of the scoring in the contest came in the second period. SMU scored first at 6:01 into the second but the Royals responded quickly. Roberts goal came at 7:25 and then O'Brian's score came at 11:08 to give the Royals the lead. But unlike Friday night when Bethel went on to score five unanswered goals, the Royals scoring ended there. Saint Mary's tied the game up at 2-2 early in the third period and neither team was able to score again the rest of the way. The Royals got four shots on net in the overtime period to none for Saint Mary's. Bethel was 0-3 on the power play while SMU was 0-7.
The Royals took four of the available six points this weekend from the Cardinals, the same result as last season for Bethel against their nemesis in SMU. Bethel has not swept the Cardinals since the 2007-08 season and their four points this year and last are the only times they have accomplished the feat during that span. Bethel will now take on the University of St. Thomas next weekend. The Royals and Tommies shared the 2015-16 MIAC Championship. Friday will be at UST in Mendota Heights, Minnesota with Saturday at Bethel University Arena.
