ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—The Bethel University football team travels down Snelling Avenue Saturday afternoon to face Hamline University in the final game of the 2016 season. The Royals (4-5, 4-3 MIAC) are trying to end their season 5-3 after starting 1-4, while the Pipers (5-4, 3-4 MIAC) are trying to finish with four conference wins for the first time since 1997 and among the Top 4 MIAC teams for the first time since 1995.
Hamline holds the overall advantage in head-to-head results against Bethel with a 27-25 record dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1952. The Royals, however, have won the last 20 against the Pipers, which includes a combined score of 275-54 in the last six contests.
Hamline is led by sophomore quarterback Justice Spriggs, who leads the league with 264.4 yards passing per game. Spriggs has completed 205-of-316 passes (64.8 percent) for 2,380 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. On defense, the Pipers are led by sophomore defensive lineman Mitchell Maday, who has wracked up 37 tackles, including 12.0 for a loss of 76 yards and 10.5 sacks for 67 yards. Senior Zach Schwalbach also has 32 tackles and six interceptions.
Bethel's offense is led by
Gunnar Bloom and
Bryce Marquardt. Bloom had a career-high 188 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries against Augsburg College last Saturday, while
Bryce Marquardt's receiving TD last week tied Bethel's all-time record for career touchdowns (25). BU is led on defense by sophomore
Dawson Brown and junior
Josh Dalki. Brown's memorable season continued last week, as the outside linebacker wrapped up four tackles, forced a fumble, and recorded his third interception of the season, which resulted in his second pick-six. Dalki tallied a team-high eight tackles, including three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery against the Auggies last week.
Kickoff between Bethel and Hamline is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Klas Field.
