ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team saw their three game winning streak get snapped by the Hamline University Pipers Saturday night in a 5-1 loss. After taking the series opener by a 5-3 score on Friday night the Royals were looking for the sweep but the Pipers shutdown the Royals offense and scored more goals on the Bethel defense than any other MIAC opponent this season. In another game that was filled with penalties, thirteen in all, the Pipers where the ones able to take advantage scoring twice on the power play to none for Bethel. Both teams had five power plays.
Hamline scored first, a power play goal 6:25 into the game. The Royals were able to even it up early in the second period when
Wendy Roberts scored from
Erin Harper. The tie did not last long however, as Hamline scored just two-and-a-half minutes later to take back the lead on another power play goal. The third period was all Pipers as they scored three more times within the first 10:33 to take the commanding 5-1 lead. Hamline got 42 shots off after getting 40 the night before, the two highest totals allowed by Bethel this season.
The loss stopped Bethel (9-8-2/7-3-2 MIAC) from moving into first place in the MIAC standings and instead leaves the Royals in a three-way tie for second, just one point behind first place St. Thomas who was swept by Saint Benedict on the weekend. The Royals are tied Augsburg who lost and tied in their series with Saint Mary's as well as with Concordia who split their series with Gustavus. The Gusties also sit just one point back of the pack in fifth place. Next weekend Bethel will play last place and winless St. Olaf College.
