Royals Respond After Loss to UST With 6-3 Win over MAC

Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel University women's tennis team was in action both Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex as they were defeated by St. Thomas 9-0 on Monday, but came back with a great win over Macalester, 6-3 on Tuesday.

"A good win today against Macalester rebounding from a tough loss the night before against St. Thomas," said Royals head coach Drew Fernelius. "St. Thomas is one of, if not the best, team we will play all year and I really thought the girls competed well. It was great to come out the next day though and get a win."

The Royals were up over Macalester 2-1 after doubles play as they were sparked by the comeback of No. 1 doubles and the dominance of the No. 3 doubles team. Kristin Vivian and Abby Kreklau found themselves down 5-6 but rallied to win 8-6 at No. 1. Anna Browning and Kourtney Jakubic turned in another dominant performance together in an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles to improve their record together to 11-4.

"Anna and Kourtney have had a really solid year for us at No. 3 doubles," said coach Fernelius.

Mattie Kidder responded well after tough loss at No. 2 doubles (7-9) with Maddy Simpson, and rolled 6-1, 6-1 to get the first singles point for Bethel at No. 4 singles. Larissa Voss moved up from her normal No. 5 slot to No. 6 and won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 and Sammi Hindt dominated her match at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Abby Kreklau earned Bethel's sixth point of the match with a big 6-0, 6-0 victory against an opponent who Kreklau lost to last season, showcasing her improvement in her senior season. Kristin Vivian and Kourtney Jakubic fell in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles for the final 6-3 score.

"I'm proud of their effort all the way through and we are just going to keep working hard for our last two matches," commented coach Fernelius.

The Royals now stand 12-7 overall on the season and 4-4 in MIAC play and have two matches remaining on their schedule. They will travel to St. Catherine University this Saturday before hosting St. Olaf in the season finale the following Saturday.
