Bethel Splits Saturday Series with St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Bethel University's softball team suffered a setback against St. Olaf College Saturday afternoon, but recovered nicely in game two with a 10-1 rout over the Oles.

The Royals were tied with St. Olaf in Saturday's opener up until the seventh inning, but it was Jessica Bentley's RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh that scored the runner on first and gave the Oles their fourth conference win of the season.

Thankfully for Bethel, they didn't let game one get to their heads. Instead, they piled on ten runs over the course of seven innings and allowed just one in the 10-1 victory.

Karli Persson picked up her fifth consecutive victory in the circle, as she threw the entire second game against the Oles. Persson allowed one run on five hits and one walk, but struck out four along the way.

The Royals mustered nine hits in game one, but were never able to come up with the timely hit. Jess Brown finished 3-for-3, while Abbie Bircher and Brooke Charleston each recorded RBI singles.

The second seven-inning matchup between Bethel and St. Olaf saw the Royals unload 14 hits. Angie Jackson finished 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI, while Kal Sorenson was 3-for3 with one run and one more driven in. Much like yesterday's first game against St. Katherine, Angie Jackson blasted a home run in her first at-bat of the day. Also like yesterday, Kelsey Anderson hit a home run in the same game with a runner on.

Much like game one, Abbie Bircher had another nice performance in the second of the series. Bircher, who has tallied at least one hit in 12 out of the last 14 games, finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in.

Bethel will look to rebound from Saturday's split with a doubleheader against Concordia College Tuesday, April 14. First pitch between the Royals and Cobbers is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
