Bethel Softball Comes Up Two Outs Short of Saturday Sweep

ROCHESTER, Minn.—Bethel University's softball team improved to 2-2 on the season thanks to a split Saturday evening in Rochester. The Royals routed UW-Oshkosh 10-1 in five innings and were two outs away from topping No.18-ranked Luther, but fell in the end 9-7. BU's weekend competition was the final tune-up before their annual spring break trip to Clermont, Florida.

Kelsey Anderson had an incredible day at the plate for the Royals, as the senior first-baseman went 4-for-6 with five runs scored and four RBI. She also finished with 12 putouts in the field. Also having a productive day offensively was Angie Jackson, who was 3-for-6 with three runs, two RBI, and a pair of walks.

Abbie Bircher continued her hot start to the season in Saturday's opener, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. She, Kelsey Anderson, and Shelbi Swenson all recorded a home run throughout the night. In her first three games Bircher was 6-of-8 with six RBI and nine total bases.

Karli Persson notched her first win of the season, as the junior went 4.0 innings against the Titans in Bethel's 10-1 victory. Persson allowed just four hits, one walk, and one run before Kelsey Anderson came in to pitch the final frame. BU's second starter, Lindsay Edeen, attempted to earn her second consecutive win to start the season, but was charged with her first loss after allowing eight hits, seven runs, and seven walks.

The Royals now look ahead to their upcoming stay in Florida, where they'll play 12 games against nonconference opponents from all across the country. This week is pivotal for Bethel, as a third of their season takes place over an eight-day stretch in Clermont. BU will begin its spring break trip with a Saturday double-header against Bates College and UW-Stevens Point.
