Box Score MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team fell on the road to (RV) St. Thomas by a 5-2 final score in Friday's MIAC series opener. The Royals scored both of their goals on the power play but UST also scored a pair of power play goals to go along with two even strength goals and an empty netter with two seconds remaining.
St. Thomas scored the first two goals of the game at 2:34 and 11:25 of the first period to jump out to the early lead.
Dallas Marvin scored his first goal with the Bethel Royals at 18:27 in the first period with assists to
George Splichal and
JT Walters. Despite the 2-1 deficit after the first period Bethel outshot the Tommies 15-11. The second period was a different story however, as UST outshot Bethel 16-2 but scored just once, on a power play late in the period, to extend their lead to 3-1. The Tommies scored again midway through the third period to go up 4-1 before Bethel answered back with a Mike Bond power play goal at 11:37.
Mitch Hughes and Splichal assisted. The Royals outshot the Tommies in the third period, 15-13 but could not draw any closer before UST added an empty net goal with two seconds remaining.
Tucker Murphy made 35 saves in net for Bethel.
The Royals will host the Tommies Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Bethel University Arena. UST now sits alone in first place at 3-0 with nine points while the Royals are 0-3 in the MIAC.
