ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team cruised to a dominant, 5-0 victory over their Snelling Avenue neighbors, the University of Northwestern. The Royals got a pair of early goals by
Savannah Swanson then continued to tack on as they broke their six game losing streak in a big way on a perfect late fall evening.
Swanson opened the scoring for Bethel with a goal just 2:40 into the game and added the next one just twelve minutes later. Freshman Marnie Zilka scored her first collegiate goal in the 20th minute to extend the Royals lead to 3-0. Bethel wasn't done with their first half scoring either as
Meghan Mattheisen added her first collegiate goal as well at the 33 minute mark. Mattheisen's score came off an
AddieKay Johnson corner kick. The Royals took just eight shots in the first half, connecting on four of them to take the 4-0 lead. Bethel outshot UNW 9-3 in the second period, but was able to score just once. Senior captain
Julia Perkins knocked in a free kick at 72:08 to make the 5-0 final score.
For the game Bethel outshot UNW 17-8 with a 9-6 shot on goal advantage. Bethel earned six corners to just one for UNW.
Jess Gapinski earned her first career shutout in goal for Bethel as she made six saves on the night.
The victory improved the Royals to 3-8 on the season. Bethel will look to keep their offense rolling as they host the College of Saint Benedict Blazers Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
