BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team exploded for seven goals Friday night, two more than they had scored in the previous five games, in a 7-0 victory over St. Olaf College. Sophomore forward
Kathryn Larson scored a hat-trick in the game with a short-handed goal and two power play goals. Bethel outshot the Oles 40-10 in the contest as the Royals snapped a season high three-game losing streak.
The Royals wasted little time getting the scoring going as
Wendy Roberts was able to deke the Oles goalie and score a pretty goal just 2:13 into the game.
Briita Nelson and
Hadley Cookson assisted Roberts. Seven minutes later Larson had a great opportunity stuffed out by an outstanding save by St. Olaf goaltender Sam Ubl. On the ensuing faceoff however, Larson was able to knock the puck from the faceoff spot towards the Ole net and it took a bounce and found its way through Ubl's pads and into the net for a short-handed, unassisted goal.
Megan O'Brian finished off the Royals first period scoring with a goal that was assisted by
Lauren Kolak and Larson.
In the second period Larson went back to work on the Royals power play as she scored twice in the first nine minutes. O'Brian assisted on the first goal while Kolak assisted on the second. Larson has now scored an MIAC high 11 goals on the season. At 15:39 in the second period senior
Kalie Johnson got in on the scoring with a goal of her own to make it 6-0.
Karly Vohden and
Lindsay Burman assisted on Johnson's goal. The third period saw Bethel score just once as
Natalie Simons lit the lamp, unassisted. In all 10 different Royals scored points. Larson led the way with four points while O'Brian was the only other Royal to have more than one as she tallied both a goal and an assist.
A pair of goalies made five saves each for the Royals.
Michelle Klimstra earned the win by playing the first two periods, making five saves in the first period and none in the second. Megan Hanson then made five saves in net for Bethel during the third period.
The win improves the Royals to 9-6-1 and 4-4-1 in the MIAC while St. Olaf fell to 1-12-2 and 0-7-2. The two teams will faceoff Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minnesota.
