ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—For the second year in a row Brycen Wojta has got a buzzer beater to remember. In just his third game of his freshman campaign some will recall his fade away to beat Luther College, but for those that don't they should hang on to tonight's.
Trailing Gustavus Adolphus College by one point with 6.0 seconds remaining on the clock, Brycen Wojta received the inbounds pass, drove the length of the court, and buried a 10-foot jumper that went through the bottom of the net with 0.1 ticks left to give Bethel a 65-64 victory over the visiting Golden Gusties. Wojta's game-winner was made possible by the entire team's effort in overcoming Gustavus's 10-point lead with 16:31 remaining. The Royals utilized a 16-6 run over a span of eight minutes to even the score at 48-48 and from then on out play was exceptionally even until the final horn.
In fact the two teams were still tied at 62-62 with one minute remaining and even though BU took a one-point lead with 0:08 left in the game, Gustavus was able to go ahead by one after earning two shots at the free throw line with 0:06 still on the clock. The Gusties' two makes forced back-to-back timeouts by both teams and eventually the jumper from Wojta.
The Royals had one of their better shooting performances of the year, as BU finished 25-of-49 (51.0%) from the floor, but just 2-of-9 (22.2%) from downtown and 13-of-21 (61.9%) from the foul line. Gustavus outrebounded Bethel 38-26, but the Royals held GAC to 43.1 percent shooting.
Thanks to
Kyle Zimmermann's 20-point, nine-rebound effort down low Bethel was able to outscore the Gusties 44-32 in the paint. Zimmermann was perfect at the free throw line, finishing 6-of-6, and 7-of-12 from the floor.
In addition to Zim's dominant performance two others scored in double figures, including
Bridgeport Tusler, who added 13 points, and
Kyle von Schmidt-Pauli, who dropped in 11.
Jackson Canfield and
Trevor Hall collectively finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Now 10-5 overall and 6-4 against conference opponents, Bethel will face a daunting task with three of their next four games on the road. The Royals go to Northfield Saturday to face St. Olaf at 3 p.m. and then return home to battle Saint Mary's the following Saturday.
