The Royals came into Saturday's game accumulatively outshooting their opponents 67-64 but managed just six shots against the Auggies.
The Auggies started the scoring just nine minutes into the game when Olivia Muyres converted her fifth goal of the season on the assist from Molly Allen. Despite falling into an early deficit, the Royals escaped several more scoring chances for the Auggies and entered the half trailing by just one goal.
The Royals continued to play stout defense in the second half and with just eight minutes left in regulation, Emma Mattheison netted the equalizer assisted by
Samantha Provost. The late goal drew a deafening roar from the crowd as the momentum had finally shifted back to Coach Maxwell's squad.
However, the Royals were not able to keep the momentum in their favor as Marie Fitzgerald struck the game-winning goal just three minutes after the Royals had pulled even. In spite of another late goal, the Royals appeared to tie the game once again in the 88th minute but the goal was nullified due to a controversial offside call.
The Royals ultimately suffered their first home loss against a tough conference opponent and will now have a week to prepare for their next game against Carleton. The Bethel women will look to grab their first victory of the season against the Knights at 1 PM next Saturday.
