Royals Set New Program Record for Wins with 5-1 Victory at Saint Ben's

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team scored a 5-1 victory on the road over the College of Saint Benedict, picking up a new program record 16th overall win and 12th Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win. Cristina Masten and Lindsay Burman, the leading scorers in the MIAC, scored two goals each in the win while Kathryn Larson tallied the Royals final goal.

The Royals scored early in the first period, just as they did in Friday's win, but unlike Friday they didn't stop there. Burman and Larson hooked up for the first goal at 6:37 in the first period before Masten scored her first goal at 10:06. Kalie Johnson, the MIAC assist leader, and Erin Harper assisted Masten. The 2-0 score remained until 14:24 in the second period when Masten scored again, her third goal of the weekend sweep. Megan O'Bran and Johnson assisted Masten. For Johnson it was her 22nd assist of the season, which is 10 more than the next non-Royal on the MIAC leader board. Burman then made it 4-0 just before the second intermission as she scored on assists from Caroline Kivisto and Kathryn Larson. For Larson, it was her 14th assist on the season.

Saint Ben's scored their lone goal early in the third period to cut Bethel's lead to three but the Royals responded a little more than four minutes later. Larson scored for Bethel with the assist to Burman. Larson tallied her 25th point of the season which is fourth on the Bethel squad but still one more than any other MIAC player. Burman's assist marked her 31st point overall and her 15th in the last seven games.

Bethel improved to 16-5-2 overall, breaking the previous program record of 15 wins which had been done twice before in 2010-11 and 2012-13. The Royals also won 11 MIAC games in 2010-11 and 2012-13 and set the new mark today improving to 12-4 in MIAC play. Bethel will now host the Golden Gusties from Gustavus next Friday night to begin the final regular season series of the year. Gustavus split their series with St. Thomas with both teams sitting just two points ahead of the third place Royals going into the final weekend. St. Thomas will take on the same Saint Ben's team that the Royals just dispatched of but the Blazers were able to sweep the Gusties two weeks ago.
