BLAINE, MInn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team survived an upset-minded College of Saint Benedict team Friday night, coming away with a 1-0 victory. On a night where the Royals honored their two seniors,
Cristina Masten and
Allison Linde, it was Masten's early first period goal that stood up for Bethel. Despite several good opportunities, the Royals were unable to score again but thanks to great defensive play, they did not need to.
Erika Allen made a total of 14 saves but was rarely threatened by the Blazers, who had won three of their last four games, including a series sweep of #7 Gustavus two weeks prior.
Masten's goal came just 2:57 into the game as reigning MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week
Lindsay Burman set her up. Masten and Burman are the MIAC's leading scorers at 31 and 28 points respectively. Burman was denied multiple times by Blazer goalie Jenna Traut on breakaway goals as she used her speed to get past the defense and led Bethel with four shot attempts in the game. Each team was whistled for four penalties but all power plays were killed off. The Royals outshot the Blazers 24-14.
Bethel improves to 15-5-2 on the season and 11-4 in the MIAC. Both win totals tie program records as the Royals will look to break those Saturday afternoon. The series will move to St. Cloud, Minn., Saturday with the two teams squaring off at 2 p.m. at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex.
