Big First Period Lifts Cobbers Over Royals

BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team fell at home to Concordia College Friday night by a 5-2 score. The Royals and Cobbers scored one goal a piece in each of the second and third periods but a three goal first period was the difference for Concordia. Freshman Ty Walls and JT Walters scored Bethel's goals, both on power plays.

Concordia was able to build their early 3-0 lead with goals early (2:32), midway through (11:50), and right at the end (19:53), of the first period. The last Concordia goal came on a power play. Bethel was able to get on the board with a power play goal of their own at 9:22 in the second period when Ty Walls fired one home. Mitch Hughes assisted Walls on his first collegiate goal. The Cobbers took back their three goal lead just a minute-and-a-half later, however, and went into the third period with a 4-1 lead. JT Walters brought the Royals back when he was able to find the top corner of the net at 9:04 in the third. The power play goal was Walters team-leading fourth of this season. Eric Szafranski and Taylor Brown created the chance for Walters. Concordia added an empty net goal with a minute-and-a-half remaining in the game for the final 5-2 score.

Concordia outshot Bethel 33-31 on the night while the Royals had six power play opportunities to Concordia's four. Matt Rowe made 28 saves in net for Bethel.

Concordia improved to 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAC. Bethel fell to 2-5 and 0-3 in the MIAC. The two squads will return to the ice Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
