ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team kept their playoff hopes alive when
Jessica Huseby put a penalty kick into the back of the net just a minute into overtime, to give the Royals a 1-0 victory on the road at Hamline University. The Royals and Pipers had played a scoreless first and second periods before Huseby's kick early on the first overtime period made the Royals winners.
Bethel outshot the Pipers 12-9 overall but were even in shots on goal at 6-6 but the Royals were able to capitalize on the final shot.
Micale Jensen made six saves for Bethel to post her sixth shutout of the season. All told the Royals have not allowed a goal in the last two weeks covering over 360 minutes and are 4-0 in that stretch.
The victory moves the Royals into a tie for seventh place with St. Kate's, their opponent in the season finale on Saturday. The two squads are just one point behind sixth place St. Olaf who currently holds the position for the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot. The Oles have two games remaining, against league leading Augsburg and third place Carleton this Wednesday and Saturday. Bethel will finish with winless Gustavus on Wednesday before the matchup with St. Kate's.
The Royals and Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties will kick-off at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
