Royals Overcome 17-24 Deficit in Final Frame to Defeat Carleton 3-1

Box Score Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Minn.—What a day for Bethel volleyball, as they were able to channel momentum from Friday night's 3-0 win against Hamline into a dramatic, come-from-behind victory on the road at Carleton College Saturday afternoon. The Royals won the opener 25-22, but dropped the second set 23-25. Despite winning the third set 25-21, Bethel had to overcome a 17-24 deficit in the fourth to capture the theatrical 3-1 victory.

The Royals improved to 17-8 on the season with a 6-3 record against MIAC opponents. The win over the Knights, who had big wins over Saint Mary's and No. 17-ranked Saint Benedict two weeks ago, inches Bethel closer to a 2014 MIAC playoff berth.

The 9-0 run to closeout the match was filled with incredible excitement. The Royals planted six kills—three from Tegan LaBerge—and coerced three attack errors on Carleton to thieve a much-needed road contest.

Bethel hit .225 throughout the match and finished with 10.0 total blocks thanks to 16 block assists and two solo blocks. Pacing the Royals offensively was Kristin Stern, who continues to turn heads throughout her rookie campaign. Stern finished the match with 16 kills and a hitting mark of .355.

Stern's sidekick, Tegan LaBerge, also had an outstanding performance Saturday afternoon, finishing the match with 14 kills, a .400 hitting percentage, and 4.5 blocks. Carlee Hoppe also added 13 kills and 11 digs.

Hoppe was one of six Bethel players throughout the match to record double-digit digs. Leading the way in the back row was Katie Lubben, who collected 18 digs, alongside her 56 assists throughout the four frames. It's the ninth time this season Lubben has recorded a double-double, but the first time since the Royals 3-0 sweep at St. Catherine three weeks ago. Courtney Sheets also amassed 14 digs throughout the contest.

Bethel now welcomes Gustavus Adolphus to the Robertson Center next Wednesday night for a MIAC battle scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Following their date with the Gusties, BU will closeout its regular season a week from today at home against the Tommies of St. Thomas.
