BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team put up six more goals in an impressive 6-1 victory over St. Catherine University Friday night. Bethel got a pair of goals each from
Cristina Masten and
Lindsay Burman, while
Kalie Johnson had a goal and two assists to lead the Royals. Bethel scored once in the first period, twice in the second, and three times in the third. The Royals outshot the Wildcats 33-15 in the game.
Masten, still the MIAC's leading scorer, was able to punch one home midway through the first period off a pass from Kali Johnson, the MIAC's assists leader.
Megan O'Brian also assisted on the play. In the second period
Lindsay Burman continued her impressive play with a goal at 8:07 as she once again used her speed to skate right through the defense and finished it off with the score.
Kathryn Larson assisted Burman. Johnson then got in on the scoring action as she put one home with just 41 seconds remaining in the second period to give Bethel the 3-0 lead after two.
Hannah Williams picked up her first collegiate point with an assist along with
Erin Harper.
The leading goal scorer in the MIAC,
Caroline Kivisto, needed just 13 seconds in the third period to score her 14th goal of the season, unassisted. Burman then tallied her second goal of the night, and seventh point in her last two games, with the assist going to Kivisto at 3:04 in the third. Just over nine minutes later St. Kate's was able to get on the board as they were able to get a rebound past Bethel's
Erika Allen. On the night Allen made 14 saves. Johnson set Masten up again, this time on a power play, to finish the scoring at 13:41 in the third.
Bethel created some extra room between themselves and the fourth place Wildcats in the MIAC standings. The win improves Bethel to 13-3-2 overall and 9-2 in the MIAC for 18 points. St. Kate's fell to 9-7-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the MIAC. The Wildcats are now tied for fourth with Concordia at 13 points. The gap between the third place Royals and the first place Golden Gusties from Gustavus dropped to just two points as Saint Ben's knocked off the league leaders in St. Peter, Minn., 4-2. Gustavus suffered their first MIAC loss since February of 2012 and fell into a tie with St. Thomas for the top spot. Bethel will face off against the Tommies next weekend following the series with St. Kate's.
The Royals and Wildcats will face off again tomorrow at St. Catherine at 4 p.m.
