ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Following a perfect 2-0 effort Friday night, Bethel University's volleyball team ended Saturday with a split against Nebraska Wesleyan University and conference foe, Concordia College, in the final day of the 2013 Bethel Invitational. The Royals (5-3, 0-0 MIAC) dropped their opening match against the undefeated Prairie Wolves (8-0, 0-0 GPAC) of NWU 3-0 (15-25, 24-26, 15-25), but didn't lose heart—topping the Cobbers (5-3, 0-0 MIAC) in the tournament finale, 3-1 (25-10, 16-25, 25-17, 25-12).
Carlee Hoppe had a day for Bethel, as the freshman standout had a combined 33 kills. Hoppe went for eight in the opener against NWU, before thrashing 25 slams and a .579 attacking percentage in the finale. In addition to her offensive performance, the Shakopee, Minn., native added 23 digs and five blocks.
Hoppe and Nicole Ackatz were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the two-day affair. After accumulating 30 kills Friday night, Ackatz added 15 more Saturday, along with four blocks.
Freshman setter, Ashlyn Hucky, led the Royals in assists Saturday with 23 sets against the Prairie Wolves and 27 more against the Cobbs. Meanwhile, it was Kali Johnson, who was the defensive anchor with 28 digs on the day.
A 3-1 weekend helps Bethel improve to 5-3 on the year. The Royals will continue to be tested next weekend at the UW-Whitewater Tournament, where they will face Wisconsin Lutheran, Milikin, UW-Whitewater, and Northwestern.
