Royals Fall in Double Overtime Heartbreaker

St. Olaf scored the game winner in the second overtime in the MIAC opener

Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel University women's soccer team found themselves at .500 again after dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to conference foe, St. Olaf, in double overtime. It was the first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game for both teams.

The Oles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as forward Kasja Brindley fired one into the top corner of the goal in the seventh minute off a free kick. The two teams played even for the rest of the first half and into the second half until Bethel junior, Jessica Huseby, tallied the equalizer with 23 minutes to play.

Regulation ended in a draw and Bethel had its first overtime game on hand. The extra time was filled with scoring chances for both teams, but St. Olaf was able to capitalize on their opportunity as Madison Van Wylen scored on a rebound in the 113th minute, giving the Oles a 2-1 victory. Both teams appeared to be exhausted at the game's conclusion, as the fast pace resulted in 38 total shots (20 for St. Olaf and 18 for Bethel).

Bethel falls to 2-2 on their season and will attempt to improve their conference record to 1-1 on Saturday when they travel to Minneapolis to take on the Auggies of Augsburg College.
