ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team started the 2013 season off on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Simpson College. 2012 All-Conference performer
Jessica Huseby picked up right where she left off, scoring both of the goals for the Royals.
Both teams were evenly matched for the better part of the first half, until freshman
Mikala Smith found a cutting Huseby who sent a rocket to the back of the net, putting the Royals up 1-0 with 15 minutes to play in the half. Huseby's goal seemed to energize her team, as they began relentlessly attacking the Simpson defense. The Royals finished the first half with 12 shots, compared to just one from the Storm.
Huseby added her second goal with 18 minutes to go in the game, assisted again by Smith as well as sophomore
Julia Perkins. Huseby led the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in assists in 2012, but after just one game, it is clear that the Royals will rely on her to take a heavy load of the scoring in her junior season.
Simpson cut the lead in half with a goal under 5 minutes, but the Royals maintained their composure and cruised to the 2-1 victory. Bethel outshot Simpson 15-6 in the contest.
Bethel will enjoy some time off on the holiday weekend before they head to Menomonie, Wis. to play the University of Wisconsin – Stout on Wednesday, looking to improve to 2-0 on the year.
