MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team used an early third period goal by
Cristina Masten to break a 1-1 tie and go on to earn a 2-1 victory on the road against Augsburg College. The win keeps the Royals firmly in fourth place in the MIAC standings with just five games remaining. Despite outshooting the Auggies 20-4 in the third period alone Bethel was not able to add to its lead after Masten scored just 80 seconds into the period, keeping Royals fans on the edge of their seats all the way to the end. Erika Allen made 16 saves while her counterpart, Brianna Schulz recorded 35 saves.
The Royals got on the board first when
Jill Larson scored her second goal of the season with just over two minutes remaining in the first period.
Molly Eagles was credited with the assist. At the 5:33 mark of the second period Augsburg's Rachel Hennessy scored to tie the game at one a piece. The Royals came out in the third period determined to break out and Masten teamed up with
Caroline Kivisto and
Kalie Johnson for her 13th goal of the season to give the Royals the lead.
The win improved the Royals to 7-4-2 in MIAC play and 10-8-2 overall. Augsburg fell to 2-9-2 within the MIAC and 6-12-2 overall. The two teams will come to the Bethel University Arena Saturday afternoon with the puck scheduled to drop at 3 p.m.
