Royals Can't Complete Upset over Gusties in MIAC Playoffs

Bethel can't sustain two goal lead in semifinal affair

Box Score

ST. PETER, Minn.—Despite having a 2-0 lead against No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus College in the third period of the MIAC Semifinals, Bethel was unable to close the door in St. Peter, Minn.—falling by a final score of 3-2. The Royals (15-10-2) were attempting pull off the road upset, as they had never beaten the Gusties (25-0-1) in school history and were trying to give GAC its first loss of the 2012-13 season, but their fifth trip to the playoffs in the last six years was abruptly ended.

Biz Huss (Sr., Beaver Bay, Minn.) scored the first goal of the game at the 12-minute mark of the opening period when she collected a pass from Charise Kendrick (Jr., Scandia, Minn.) on a 2-on-1 opportunity and put it past Gustie goaltender Lindsey Hibbard. The goal gave Huss her 12th of the year and Kendrick her fourth assist.

Erika Allen (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) was asked to play between the pipes Tuesday night and helped keep the Royals ahead throughout the second period, as the goalie made 12 dynamic stops that kept BU ahead 1-0 after two periods of play.

Bethel continued to build excitement early in the third period when Lindsay Burman (Jr., Stanchfield, Minn.) fired the puck past the GAC defense and into the net for the Royals second goal of the game at the 16:08 mark in the final frame. The goal gave the junior forward her 11th goal of the season.

A pair of unfortunate penalties gave Gustavus Adolphus a pair of power play goals that not only equalized the score, but halted the Royals momentum in the final minutes of play. The Golden Gusties then scored the game-winner with 5:22 left in the game and Bethel was never able to level the score.

Despite three goals allowed in the final frame, Allen was exceptional—stopping 36 shots fired from the Golden Gusties. Meanwhile, the Royals were only credited nine shot attempts, but they had a number of good looks and all nine shots gave the Gusties all they could handle Tuesday evening.

Bethel's storied season finishes after the MIAC Playoff loss. The playoff appearance is the fifth in the last six seasons—and marks the third time in a row BU was knocked off by Gustavus.
