ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team closed out the 2012-13 season with a 4-1 loss at Saint John's University, as the Johnnies won a share of the MIAC title. The Johnnies scored a pair of power play goals near the end of the second period to break a 1-1 tie and go on to the victory.
Brock Raffaele scored the Royals lone goal and was assisted by
Jack Emmer and
Jack Paul. The assist for Paul brought him into a three-way tie for the MIAC scoring title in his final season with teammate
Mitch Hughes and Saint John's forward John Haeg at 26 points.
Saint John's got on the scoreboard first with a goal 12:14 into the first period. Raffaele tied the game up for Bethel with his sixth goal of the year halfway through the second period. Inside of the last three minutes of the second period, however, the Johnnies scored two power play goals and added their final goal five minutes into the third period. Saint John's outshot the Royals 32-28 and was 2-4 on the power play while Bethel was 0-3.
Steven Bolton took the loss in the net, making 28 saves.
Bethel finishes the season with a record of 7-18 and 6-10 in MIAC play after starting the season 5-1. Four seniors played in their final collegiate game in
Jon Crouse,
Jack Paul,
Corey Grandner and
Dan Rowland. Paul finishes his Bethel career with 103 career points, good for 17th on the All-Time scoring list at Bethel. Paul and Hughes are the first Bethel Royals to win a MIAC scoring title.
