BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team settled for a 2-2 tie against Concordia College in a non-conference matchup when the Cobbers scored with just four minutes remaining in the third period. Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first period before Bethel scored twice in the second to take a 2-1 lead until the Cobbers were able to tie it up late in the third.
Caroline Kivisto and
Cristina Masten scored the Royals goals. A third Bethel goal in the second period was waved off as the officials ruled the Royals kicked the puck in.
Kivisto scored Bethel's first goal to tie the game at 1-1 5:30 into the second period. The goal came on a Bethel power play with assists to
Lindsay Burman and
Kathryn Larson. Masten scored the next Bethel goal almost 11 minutes later to give the Royals their first lead of the night.
Kalie Johnson and
Erin Harper assisted Masten. Bethel was able to fend off two Concordia power plays in the third period before the Cobbers scored their goal at even strength. Concordia was able to get a third power play opportunity with a chance to take a lead but the Royals killed off the first minute of the penalty and Concordia was whistled for too many players on the ice. Concordia was able to get just one shot attempt in their three third period power plays. After a minute of four on four Bethel had a minute remaining on the power play with just under a minute and a half remaining in the game. The Royals had several opportunities but were unable to capitalize as the game went into overtime. Each team sent one shot on goal in the five minute period but again, were unable to score ending in the tie. For the game Bethel outshot Concordia 25-23 with
Caitlin Dantzscher making her collegiate debut in the net for Bethel, stopping 21 Cobber shots.
In the three games played between the Royals and Cobbers in 2013, all at Bethel University Arena, the two teams have each won, lost and tied. The Royals are now 6-2-1 on the year while Concordia is 1-6-3. The Royals will return to action with a non-conference weekend series with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Bethel will travel to Eau Claire on Friday before hosting the Blugolds on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bethel University Arena at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn.
