MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team traveled to Concordia College and were defeated 5-2 Friday night. The Royals found themselves down 3-1 after the first period and were able to draw within 3-2 early in the third. The Cobbers put the game away, however, with two goals midway through the third period.
Colin Mayer and
Travis Payne scored for Bethel, with
Brock Raffaele assisting on both goals and Payne along with
Tony Larson also picking up assists.
The game was scoreless until a flurry of scoring broke out in the last six minutes of the first period. Concordia scored twice with the first at 14:03 and the second at 16:40. The Royals and Mayer answered 50 seconds later but the Cobbers regained their two goal lead just 27 seconds after Mayer's score. The second period was scoreless despite seeing the most shot attempts of the night. Concordia fired 14 in unsuccessfully along with nine from Bethel. The third period started promising for Bethel with a power play goal from
Travis Payne 3:15 in. Concordia kept the Royals offense in check the rest of the way however, as Bethel put just four shots on goal in the period. A power play goal at 10:03 put the Cobbers back up by two before tacking on another goal at 14:38. For the game Concordia outshot Bethel 38-19 despite being called for eight penalties totaling 16 minutes. Bethel was called for four infractions and eight minutes. Each team converted one power play opportunity as Bethel was 1-4 and Concordia 1-2.
The two teams will square off again Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as the Royals will look to gather their first win of the season. The loss Friday drops Bethel to 0-6-1 and 0-2-1 in MIAC play while Concordia improved to 5-2 overall, 2-1 in the MIAC.
