Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team traveled to St. Catherine's University Thursday night and came away with a 1-1 draw to open a pivotal MIAC series. In a rare Thursday matchup, the Royals and Wildcats both scored their lone goals in the second period but were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way despite good opportunities. Jessica Gapinski (Fr., Hackensack, Minn.) scored the Royals goal and was assisted by Kate Wahlin (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), while goalie Jess Newstrom (Sr., Cambridge, Minn.) made 30 saves.

“We had some good scoring chances but were just unable to capitalize,” said Royals coach Brian Carlson. “The women worked hard and I was pleased with their effort.”

The Wildcats got on the board first with a goal just 1:11 into the second period. The Royals and Gapinski responded with their goal at 7:59 in the second. For Gapinski it was her second goal and second point of the season. Bethel outshot the Wildcats 11-8 over the third period and overtime but were unable to break the tie.

The tie brings the Royals MIAC point total to 10 which is tied with St. Thomas for fourth place in the MIAC standings and just one point behind St. Catherine's and Concordia who are tied for second with the rest of the MIAC scheduled to begin their series tomorrow night. The Royals and Wildcats will resume their series Saturday afternoon at the Bethel University Arena with a 3 p.m. start time.
