ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team continued their dominance against Northwestern College with a 4-0 victory Friday afternoon at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex. In thirteen matches against their Snelling Avenue neighbors the Royals improved to 12-1. Aided by a strong wind, the Royals scored all four goals in the second period. It was the Royals home opener for the 2012 season and their second victory, improving to 2-2 on the year.
After playing a scoreless first period in which the Royals were unable to capitalize on several good scoring opportunities they struck early and often in the second period. Three minutes in Lydia Bergeson (Sr., Mauston, Wis.) scored on a ball that was deflected off a Northwestern defender and into the net. Just eight minutes later Bergeson added another goal on an assist from Christa Heilgenthal (So., Ames, Iowa). In the 71st minute sophomore Blythe Whealy (Wayzata, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season. She was assisted by Jessica Huseby (So., Medina, Minn.). Suzette Anderson (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) capped the scoring for the Royals with a goal at the 76:46 mark.
"The girls had a great second half," said head coach Amanda Maxwell. "It was a team effort to get the goals we did. Northwestern is a good team so it was a great win for us."
The Royals will now head into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play as they will host Augsburg next Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
