ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - On a windy, cool, fall afternoon the Bethel University women's soccer team turned in a dominant effort in a 4-1 victory at home against St. Mary's University. The Royals took a season high 28 shots and limited St. Mary's to just four. Jessica Huseby (So., Medina, Minn.) continued her hot scoring with two goals and an assist while Anne Fazio (Sr., Holland, Mich.) scored once and Lydia Brubaker had an assist. Kelsey Flaherty (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) also scored for the Royals off an assist by Blythe Whealy (So., Wayzata, Minn.).
The Royals came out attacking with eight shots and four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes. The second shot attempt for the Royals came off the hot foot of Jessica Huseby who scored her first goal of the game at the 5:10 mark. Lydia Brubaker assisted Huseby. Anne Fazio scored 23 minutes later off a Huseby assist to make the score 2-0.
“It was great to come out and possess the ball well the first 20 minutes and get a couple of goals early,” Royals head coach Amanda Maxwell said.
St. Mary's was able to get a goal at the 40:30 mark to draw within one goal. The game went to the half at 2-1.
Huseby scored five minutes into the second period, just like she did to start the game, to put the Royals up 3-1. The unassisted goal was the tenth point in the last three games for the sophomore from Medina, Minnesota.
“She has been very dangerous and making things happen up top,” coach Maxwell said. “She is a great one-on-one player.”
Senior Kelsey Flaherty closed the scoring for the Royals when she connected off an assist by Blythe Whealy with 12:59 left in the game. The Royals put 19 of their 28 shots on goal in the game with Flaherty and Huseby putting five each on goal.
With the victory the Royals improve to 3-4-2 on the year and 1-1-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. St. Mary's dropped to 0-8-0 and 0-3-0. The Royals will travel to face St. Catherine's Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. before returning home next Saturday to face Macalester.
