ST. PAUL – The Royal's women's tennis team traveled to St. Paul Saturday to take on the Scots of Macalester College, but couldn't completely hold on, as Macalester escaped defeat and conquered Bethel 6-3. BU took two of three throughout the doubles competitions, but only mustered one single's win, despite being highly competitive.
Steph Brown (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) and
Lisa Scheevel (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) had most likely the biggest roller coaster throughout the day, as each was defeated twice in excruciatingly close matches. In the number one doubles affair, the two were outdueled 8-5. In the singles contest, Scheevel was defeated 7-5, 6-3 in the number one match. Brown was tested even more, but was outlasted 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in the number three singles matchup.
The Royals captured wins in both the number two and number three doubles matches, as
Kayla Wheeler (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.) and
Kristin Vivian (Fr., Green Bay, Minn.) escaped defeat 9-7 in the number two doubles match and
Amanda Johnson (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and
Charise Kendrick (So., Scandia, Minn.) defeated their opponent 8-5 in the number three duo match.
Amanda Johnson recorded the only singles victory of the match with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 win over the number five player from Macalester.
Bethel will face St. Catherine University and St. Olaf College this week at home as they face both MIAC opponents at Ona Orth Complex. Tuesday and Thursday's matches are two of the final four matches of the season.
