ARDEN HILLS, MInn. - The Bethel University football team travels to Northfield, Minn. this weekend to take on St. Olaf College in a 1 p.m. affair at Manitou Field. The Royals (7-1, 5-1 MIAC) hope to secure its second place standing in the MIAC, while the Oles (6-2, 4-2 MIAC) look to get in the mix of second-place teams. Saturday's contest is the first time the two teams have squared off since St. Olaf pulled off a 30-28 upset over #5 Bethel, thanks to a Dan Dobson last-minute drive on BU's homecoming game.
The Oles have found success in 2012 via the air, as quarterback Dan Dobson has thrown for 1,958 yards--a league best--and his receivers Stephen Asp and Jake Schmiesing are among the league leaders in yards receiving as well as receiving touchdowns. In addition to an exceptional aerial attack, St. Olaf also carries the third best back in the league, as Michael Thai averages 92.4 yards per game.
Conversely, the Royals will continue to rely on its balanced offense attack and stiff-nosed defense.
Brandon Marquardt's (So., Champlin, Minn.) 236 all-purpose yards against Hamline tag-teamed with a healthy
Jesse Phenow (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) is a reassuring sign for the Bethel offense. Meanwhile,
Erik Peterson (So., Orono, Minn.) continues to be steady in the pocket and is tied with the Ole's Dobson for best completion percentage (68.3).
Bethel will also have its eye on another game within the conference, as the undefeated Tommies of St. Thomas travel to Moorhead, Minn. this weekend to take on Concordia College. The outcome of that game along with Bethel's contest against St. Olaf will play a large part in defining each team's postseason fate.
