MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team could not make a 1-0 lead after the first period hold up as the Concordia College Cobbers scored early in the third period and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Both teams are receiving votes for the Top 10 in the USCHO.com poll and the statistics were extremely even to go along with the score. The Cobbers owned a 26-22 shot advantage while the Royals won the faceoff battle 28-24.
“It was a great game,” said Royals coach
Brian Carlson. “It was fast paced, up and down and there was solid goaltending for both teams.”
Bethel's
Jess Newstrom made 25 saves in the game, including four in the overtime period. Bethel did not have any shot attempts in overtime. Concordia's goal, 3:01 into the third period erased the Royals lead they had held since
Kalie Johnson scored with 20 seconds left in the first period. Johnson was assisted by
Kate Wahlin and
Cristina Masten on the play. For Johnson, it was her third goal against Concordia this season after she scored twice in the Royals 4-1 non-conference win two weeks prior.
With the loss the Royals fall to 0-2-1 in MIAC play and 3-3-1 overall while Concordia is 2-0-1 and 3-1-3. The two teams will wrap up the series with a 2 p.m. faceoff Saturday afternoon.
