ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – In thrilling fashion the Bethel University women's soccer team won their fifth game in a row when senior Anne Fazio (Holland, Mich.) scored with 2:38 left in the game to give the Royals a 1-0 victory over Gustavus. The Royals controlled the ball all afternoon but, thanks to 12 saves by the Gusties goalkeeper, Bethel was unable to score until Fazio's heroics at the end. The Royals had 20 shots, 13 on goal, to the Gusties two shots total and one on goal.
“It was a great game today,” said Royals head coach Amanda Maxwell. “I am so proud of the whole team stepping up together and winning this game as a team.”
Fazio's game winning goal, her fifth in the last five Bethel victories, came off a corner kick by Christa Heilgenthal (So., Ames, Iowa). Sophomore Jessica Huseby (Medina, Minn.) headed the corner and off a deflection Fazio was there to finish it.
“It was a great goal by Anne,” coach Maxwell said. “We created a lot of chances today.”
In one particular five minute stretch starting at the 49 minute mark the Royals took seven shots, six on goal, and had two corner kicks. The Royals got three more shots off on goal over the next fifteen minutes and three more before Fazio was able to convert. The Gusties did not have a single shot attempt the entire second period but managed to stay in the game thanks to great play by their goalkeeper. Bethel keeper Callie Rosland (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) needed to make just one save to record the shutout for the Royals.
Fazio took seven shots, six on goal, during the game. Kelsey Flaherty (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) and Lydia Bergeson (Sr., Mauston, Wis.) both put a pair of shots on goal for the Royals.
Bethel will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to St. Benedicts on Tuesday afternoon. The Royals stand alone in second place in the MIAC standings at 4-1-1, behind Concordia who is 5-1.
