SAN ANTONIO – Playing in its final weekend tournament of the 2012 season, Bethel University's volleyball program traveled to San Antonio, Texas to take part in the Trinity University volleyball tournament. The Royals took down Central College (Iowa) 3-0 for the second time this season in its first match of the day and finished Friday's evening with a 3-0 loss at the hands of the hosting Trinity University.
The Central Dutch made each game close against the Royals (16-9, 4-3 MIAC) in the three-game affair, as all three sets were decided by three points or less (29-27, 25-22, 25-22). Each team performed well, however, as both Central and Bethel hit over .260 as a team. Bu finished with an attacking mark of .293, which was aided by dominant performances from
Nicole Ackatz (Jr., Elkhorn, Wis.) and
Nicole Deberry (Fr., Libertyville, Minn.).
Nicole Ackatz composed 15 kills and a .286 attacking percentage, while Deberry finished with 14 and an astonishing hitting mark of .375. Senior middle blockers
Caitie Helle (Onamia, Minn.) and
Amy Baumetz (Three Lakes, Wis.) each finished with two blocks as well.
Cierra Nickel (So., Sanborn, Minn.) continues to stay steady with 40-plus performances, as the setter finished the 3 p.m. match with 42 assists. Senior libero
Val Smith (Alexandria, Minn.) contributed 15 digs in the performance.
The south winds turned quickly as the Royals were in every game against the hosting Tigers, but failed to capture a victory in any set Friday night. The Tigers took down BU in three 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.
Anna Bernstetter (So., St. Joseph, Minn.) led the team with nine kills and two blocks, while
Amy Baumetz finished with six and four, respectively.
Smith dig 21 TU attacks, while Nickel posted 27 assists – yet all fell short, as BU finished the day 1-1.
The Royals come back for day two tomorrow, facing Austin College (Tx.) and Our Lady of the Lake University (Tx.) at 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., respectively.
