BLAINE, Minn. - Two third period goals were not enough for the Royals Friday night, as BU fell to Concordia College at home 5-3. Concordia recorded the first two goals of the night and from there Bethel was unable to bite into the lead, falling by two goals in the end. The Royals now drop to 1-3-2 (0-3 MIAC) and are looking for crucial victories within conference play going forward.
Concordia posted one goal in the opening period when Madison Grendreau fired her first goal of the season past Bethel goalie Nicole Player. The Cobbers scored its second goal five minutes into the second frame off of a Allie Bondy shot.
Bethel attempted to get back in the game when
Biz Huss (Jr., Beaver Bay, Minn.) scored on a
Haley Toter (Sr., Park Ridge, Ill.) pass. Two firsts happened on the play as Huss scored her first goal of the season, although she is definitely contributing with seven assists on her resume, and Toter's first game back after participating on the volleyball team this fall. Toter made an immediate impact, recording an assist in her first time on the ice.
Concordia diminished any Royal comeback, however, scoring two more consecutive goals, which gave the Cobbers a 4-1 lead. BU attempted to surmount the odds stacked against them, by comprising two back-to-back goals within four minutes, yet it wasn't enough as CC dropped one more goal on the Royals in an empty net situation.
Charise Kendrick (So., Scandia, Minn.) orchestrated her way through the Cobber defense to score her fourth goal of the season and the Royals second on the evening at the 11:47-mark in the third. Kendrick was aided on the play by
Cristina Masten (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.) and
Biz Huss. Huss completed her extraordinary evening with her second goal four minutes later, on an
Anna Carlson (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) delivery.
Altogether BU wristed 26 total shots throughout the three periods. The Royals outshot the Cobbers 11-9 in the third period, but couldn't out-score Concordia throughout the game.
Biz Huss was the Bethel leader in shots-on-goal with six total shots.
Rachael Geng (Sr., South Saint Paul, Minn.) added five total shots, while
Cristina Masten finished with four.
The Royals welcome the Cobbers for the second game of the weekend double-header Saturday, as the two go head-to-head at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bethel University Arena in the National Sports Center.
