Bethel Outduels St. Olaf

October 26, 2011

Alyssa Riggs posted seven saves
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel University delivered a defeat to St. Olaf University Wednesday afternoon at Ona Orth Stadium, as the Royals composed a 1-0 victory over the visiting Oles, who started the conference season undefeated throughout the first five games. The win gives Bethel a overall record of 9-6-2 (4-5-1 MIAC), and gives BU its fourth consecutive winning season.

Despite a defensive battle the entire game, Bethel tallied the only goal with under ten minutes to play in regulation. At the 80:50-mark Renn Gardner (Fr., Littleton, N.H.) took a Sophie Christiansen (Sr., Portland, Ore.) pass and put it in the back of the net. Alyssa Riggs (Fr., Columbia Heights, Minn.) and the Royal defense finished the game defensively, as Riggs tallied seven saves against the opposing shots.

A slough of Royals put the pressure on the Ole goalie, as Gardner and Christiansen, along with Carolyn Kishaba (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis.) and Lydia Bergeson (Jr., Mauston, Wis.) each fired three balls toward the net. Kelsey Flaherty (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.) also tallied two shots.

BU owned the game statistically, owning St. Olaf in shots-on-goal eight to seven. Comparatively in shots, Bethel claimined a 17-14 advantage. The Royals tallied more offensive chances from corner kicks as well.

Coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec noted, "I was very proud of the performance today, from start to finish. We came out and set the tone early.  Our girls attacked well and were organized defensively."

Iwaszkowiec continued, "Our goal was a bit opportunistic but it was well deserved. I am pleased that we are fighting to the end, playing with passion and discipline and trust in one another."

Bethel will close the 2011 season at home against the University of St. Thomas Thommies Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Ona Orth Complex will say farewell to several exceptional players on "Senior Day" as they compete in their final competition.
