ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bethel and Macalester's women's soccer teams played under the lights in frigid weather tonight with the Scots scoring just one goal - all they would need - to sink the Royals 1-0.
Macalester's goal in the 19th minute came off a cross from the right from Izzi Speer to teammate Bonnie Gale, who put it in the net to score her second goal of the season.
Callie Roseland (So., Moorhead, Minn.), making her second consecutive start in goal for the ailing
Alyssa Riggs (Sr., Columbia Heights, Minn.), made three saves on the night. Her Macalester counterpart made two saves as
Kelsey Flaherty (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.) and
Sophie Christiansen (Sr., Portland, Ore.) were the only Royals to put shots on goal tonight.
"I was very proud of the effort tonight. The game had a playoff-like intensity to it, as both teams were pushing for 3 points," said Head Coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "Overall, we played very well. Our team defense was excellent and we created enough chances to win this game. The ball just did not bounce our way tonight."
The loss drops Bethel to 8-5-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference, while Macalester improves to 9-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the MIAC. The Royals are scheduled to return to play this Saturday when they travel down to Northfield, Minn., to take on Carleton for a noon game.
