BOX SCORE
St. Cloud, Minn. – The Bethel Men's Hockey team triumphed over St. John's University this Veteran's Day (4-3). It was a hard fought battle that began a little slow for the Royals, but they persevered into their first win of the season, which was also their first conference game.
The first period was marked with two early goals by the Johnies within the first 6 minutes. The Royals were unable to conjure up any offensive chances as apprehension and sluggish game play sent them trailing by two as they headed into the locker room.
After the intermission the Royals came out strong, focused and ready to play like they did last week against UW-Steven's Point and St. Norberts.
Jake Irey (So., Waterloo, Ia.) began the offensive counter attack by scoring 6 minutes into the second. Shortly after, an interference call on St. John's lead to a power play goal scored by
Chris Fiala (Jr. Vadnais Heights, Minn.), tying the game at 2-2. But the Royals weren't finished with their onslaught yet, hitting the back of the net one more time before skating into the 3rd period. This time it was Josh Simi (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) who placed the puck inside the pipes.
Bethel University fought hard in the 3rd period as well, maintaining the energy and style of a tough team. This toughness was portrayed well when
Mason Swenson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) scored a shorthanded goal from
Jake Calleja (So., New Richmond, Wis.) who had just been released from the penalty box. Swenson was awarded the Game-Winning-Goal as St. John's was unable to answer back with a tying goal by the end of regulation.
The Royals won 4-3 and will be headed back to home ice at the Bethel University Arena in Blaine, MN. Cheer them on as they battle St. John's again and look for their first weekend sweep. Puck drops at 5 p.m.
