INDIANOLA, Iowa - Bethel traveled down to Simpson College this weekend looking to get back on the winning track after Wednesday's match against #17 Concordia. However, they would have to wait until their second match of the tournament to taste victory again as #4 Carthage defeated Bethel 3-1 before the Royals bounced back to defeat Augsburg by the same score. The victory also marked head coach Gretchen Hunt's 150th at the helm of the Bethel program.

Against Carthage, the Royals were led by Kelly Otto (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), who scored 11 points on 11 kills. Brianna Falck (Jr., DeForest, Wis.) was the next highest scorer with 7.5 points on seven kills and a block assist. Perhaps the most telling statistic of the match was Bethel's 37 attack errors, compared to just 18 by Carthage, though the Redmen did commit nine service errors compared to just five by Bethel.

The first set was almost all Carthage as they won 25-11 before Bethel bounced back to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 win. However, the Redmen rallied and took the next two sets 25-17 and 25-15. Carthage, who remained undefeated with the win, got 16 points from Michelle Madeja and another 11 points from Rachel Swoboda.

In the evening match against Augsburg, Bethel turned things around an all but dominated the match. Four players scored double digit points, including Haley Toter (So., Park Ridge, Ill.), who led the way with 16 points on 11 kills and five service aces. Falck led Bethel's attack with 13 kills and only two errors in 25 attempts for a .440 hitting percentage. Amy Werner (Fr., Three Lakes, Wis.) also had 13 points, earning them on eight kills, three solo blocks, and four block assists. Nicole Wriedt (So., Pewaukee, Wis.) rounded out the top four scorers with 10 points on 10 kills.

The Royals won the first two sets with relative ease 25-15 and 25-12 before the Auggies came back to win 25-19. Bethel rebounded with a 25-12 win to seal the match victory. Barbara Simmons led the Auggies with 13 points on 12 kills and a solo block. Bethel cut down on its errors significantly, posting a .369 hitting percentage for the match and recording eight service aces.

Bethel heads into Saturday's games with an overall record of 5-4. The team is scheduled to take on Wartburg College at 10 a.m. in the first game and the result of that match will determine who and when they will play the second match.
