FT. MYERS, Fla. - On a blustery day in southwest Florida, the Bethel Royals smacked the ball around the yard and pushed their spring break run total over 100 with wins of 15-5 and 15-7 over Lasell College. Bethel's two starting pitchers,
Matt Johnson (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and
David Anderson (Fr., Willmar, Minn.) each picked up their first collegiate wins on the mound.
It took the Royals until the second inning to get the wheels going, but once they did, they were hard to stop. Bethel put at least one run on the scoreboard in all but three of 13 team at-bats during the doubleheader.
In game one, each batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit, with four hitters getting at least two.
Mark Therrien (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn.) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while
Erik Anderson (So., Arden Hills, Minn.) was 2-for-4 with three RBI, all of which came on his second home run of the season in Bethel's seven-run fifth inning. Anderson also had a double, as did
John Slick (Jr., River Falls, Wis.) to round out Bethel's extra base hits.
In addition to Anderson, three other Royals had more than one RBI, including older brother
Bjorn Anderson (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.),
Tim Churchill (Jr., Mt. Prospect, Ill.) and
Tim Oesterlin (Jr., Rochester, Minn.). Churchill was hit by a pitch five times between the two games, giving him a career total of 28, which ties the Bethel record set by Kirby Carr in 2007.
Johnson pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out four batters and got 15 ground ball outs compared to just one fly ball out. The win is his first in a Bethel uniform.
Another pitcher to earn his first at the college level was
David Anderson who threw four innings in game two before turning the ball over to
Adam Beck (Sr., Blackduck, Minn.), who pitched for the sixth time in the past eight days. Anderson gave up four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three.
Bethel jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate before the side was retired. The offensive charge in the second game was led by
Ryan Doheny (Sr., Anoka, Minn.), who was 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, two runs, and three RBI in the game.
Kirk Darling (So., Kalamazoo, Mich.) also had three RBI in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Therrien and
Rob Lang (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) chipped in two hits each to the hit parade.
The wins give Bethel an overall record of 8-7 heading into tomorrow's game against Otterbein College, which begins at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
