ST. PETER, Minn. - For the first 90 minutes of today's game between Bethel and Gustavus, the Royals kept constant pressure on their hosts, but neither team was able to score. It wasn't until two minutes into the second overtime period that
Kelsey Flaherty (Fr., Shoreview, Minn.) fielded a pass from
Brittany Griffore (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and scored to lift Bethel to a 1-0 win.
Bethel out-shot Gustavus by a 3:1 ratio, firing 18 shots to just six. Both
Breanna Posey (Sr., Champlin, Minn.) and
Carolyn Kishaba (So., Eau Claire, Wis.) had four shots, while Flaherty and Griffore each took three. For Flaherty, the goal was her third of the season, giving her 11 points, and Griffore added to her team-leading point total with the assist, her seventh of the season, giving her 29 points.
Kiersten Hansen (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) needed to make just two saves, thanks to the defensive efforts of the Royals. She now has four shutouts on the season, and as a team, Bethel now has eight shutouts, which is a team record. Previously, the record stood at seven, set in 1998.
With the win, the Royals also set a new single season school record for wins with 10. Both the 1998 and 2008 teams had nine wins. The women's team needs just one more conference victory in its last two games to set another school record for MIAC wins in a season.
Bethel is 10-5-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the conference heading into a game with St. Olaf next Wednesday at home. Gustavus drops to 6-7-3 overall and 2-6-1 in the MIAC. Next Wednesday's game with the Oles is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
