ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Before today's first round NCAA playoff game, Bethel held a disappointing 0-4 record in postseason appearances. All that changed today as the Royals defeated Concordia University Wisconsin 28-0 to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
Running back Logan Flannery (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) ran the ball 23 times for 121 yards and a touchdown, and Dusty Wahl (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.) rushed 13 times for 77 yards and a touchdown to lead the Royals on the ground. Bethel amassed 410 yards of total offense, of which 259 came on the ground.
Quarterback Ben Wetzell (Sr., Wells, Minn.) was 15-for-24 passing for 135 yards and both a rushing and passing touchdown. Aaron Bernstetter (Jr., Holdingford, Minn.) was on the receiving end of the Wetzell touchdown pass, and had six catches for 57 yards on the day.
Once again, Bethel's defense showed why they are among the elite as they limited the Falcons to just 160 yards of total offense, including 13 tackles for losses, two quarterback sacks, and two interceptions, both by Brandon Carr (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.).
The win extends Bethel's home winning streak to 12 games. The Royals have not lost at home since Oct. 22, 2005, when they were defeated by Concordia Moorhead.
Bethel will now host UW Eau Claire in the second round of the NCAA playoffs next Saturday. UW Eau Claire defeated St. Norbert 24-20 in the last minute in De Pere, Wis., today.
