St. Paul, Minn. - Bethel had their six-match, 13-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night when they lost 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-27) to St. Thomas on the road. Both teams entered the game undefeated in MIAC play, but now St. Thomas stands alone at the top of the standings. The Tommies are ranked #6 in the nation in Division III volleyball, and they showed why using both power and finesse in their play.
In each game, Bethel was able to draw close, but St. Thomas kept the Royals at an arms distance by taking advantage of misplayed balls and finding the holes on Bethel's side of the court.
Stephanie Schmidt and Kelly Otto led the Royals with 11 kills each while current MIAC Hitter of the Week, Liz Glesne, tallied 10. Laura Naig, the MIAC Setter of the Week, had 35 sets and 10 digs – one shy of team leader Amy Anderson, who led the team with 11.
The loss drops Bethel to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play while the Tommies improve to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC. Up next for the Royals is the Border Battle taking place at Hamline University this weekend. They will play four games, starting with their match-up against Loras at 4 p.m. on Friday.
