SPRING BREAK RECAP (March 21, 2026): Baseball Sweeps Lancers, Softball Drops A Pair of One-Run Games to Tigers

ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Bethel University baseball and softball teams were in action during their spring trips on Saturday, March 21.

BASEBALL

Bethel swept Worcester State (DH) in Orlando, Florida by scores of 15-3 (7 innings) and 5-4 (7 innings). The Royals improve to 7-4, while the Lancers fall to 2-8.

Bethel's pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and held Worcester State to just four hits. Starter Drew Girtz surrendered four hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and notched five strikeouts over 4.0 innings en route to the winning decision. Aiden Eckert and Trevor Lee combined for four strikeouts and just one walk over three innings of no-hit baseball in relief.

Bethel's offense provided them with 11 hits, led by Oran Hinkle's 3-for-4 performance that included one double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Seth Nelson finished 2-for-2 with one double, three runs scored, two RBI, and one walk while Hayden Bradford's 2-for-3 outing consisted of one double, two runs scored, two walks, and one RBI. Rounding out the multi-hit Royals was Hayden Sperback, who was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Nainoa Hayashi's 1-for-4 outing included a two-run double in the third inning.

Bethel 5, Worcester State 4 (Game Two Box Score)

Bethel's pitching staff delivered another stellar performance as they allowed just three hits and notched 10 strikeouts. Cavan Banks surrendered just one hit, three runs, and tallied six strikeouts over the first 3.2 innings before Jay Krieger allowed two hits over the next 2.1 innings en route to a winning decision. Brandon Witter had two strikeouts in a perfect seventh inning, which earned him the save.

Hayden Sperbeck and Sam Abbas each went 2-for-3 with one home run. Oran Hinkle finished 2-for-4 with one double, two RBI, and one run scored. That trio engineered a Royals squad that outhit the Lancers 8-3.

The Royals conclude their spring trip tomorrow, Sunday, March 22 against Middlebury at 9:15 a.m. (ET).

SOFTBALL

Bethel dropped two games to Trinity (Texas) (DH) by scores of 3-2. The Royals fall to 3-13, while the Tigers improve to 14-5-1.

Bethel's offense were in striking distance with six hits compared to Trinity's seven. 

Abby Otterness was the lone multi-hit Royal, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Both of those runs occurred with help from Sidney Bartels, who was 1-for-2 with an RBI double, and a sacrifice fly.  Greta Stanek's 1-for-2 outing consisted of one double and one walk.

Brianna Tix and Dominique Walicke combined for seven hits, three runs (two earned), and five strikeouts in the pitching circle for Bethel.

Trinity (Texas) 3, Bethel 2 (Game Two Box Score)

Mandalyn Franks was responsible for Bethel's two-of-four hits in the game as she was 2-for-3 with one double. Camryn Thurow finished 1-for-2 with a third-inning RBI double that scored Julia Helget, who finished with one walk and a sacrifice bunt.

Royals pitcher Mary Hajduk allowed nine hits, none for extra bases, and three runs over 6.0 innings of a complete-game effort.

The Royals will host UW-River Falls (DH) at Ona Orth Athletic Complex on Wednesday, March 25 at 3:30 p.m.
