Box Score 4 ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Bethel University softball and tennis teams were in action on their respective spring trips on Sunday. Softball split with No. 18 Tufts in Seguin, Texas; dropping game one 6-3 and rebounding with a 2-1 victory in game two. The tennis teams came up on top in Orlando, Florida with the men defeating St. Norbert 7-0, and the women prevailing 6-1 over William Smith. The women's second match against St. Norbert was postponed due to rain.
The baseball team's game against Ramapo scheduled for today in Orlando was canceled due to weather. They will now play two games against Oneonta tomorrow, Monday, March 16 at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
SOFTBALL (2-6 Overall)
Tufts 6, Bethel 3 (Game One)
Three-run home runs from Cat Kawabe in the second inning, and Heaven Oliva in the third frame highlighted Tufts' 6-3 victory. All three Bethel runs occurred in the seventh inning courtesy of Greta Stanek, who knocked in Camryn Thurow and Sidney Bartels with a two-run single before she scored when Julia Helget reached on a fielder's choice.
Bartels, Thurow, and Stanek each went 1-for-3 for Bethel. Royals pitcher Dominique Walicke allowed seven hits, six runs (four earned), and notched four strikeouts over 6.0 innings in a complete-game effort.
Bethel 2, Tufts 1 (Game Two)
Both teams traded one run in the fifth inning. The Jumbos set the tone when Haley Leimback singled, and scored off Paige Murphy's double to make the score 1-0. The Royals knotted the score at 1-1 when Abby Otterness doubled, and touched home plate off Mandalyn Franks's double.
The seventh inning saw Otterness and Franks each draw a walk following Brianna Tix's lead off single that loaded the bases for Bethel. Sidney Bartel's bases loaded, walk-off single scored Tix to give the Royals a 2-1 victory.
Otterness led Bethel at the plate with a 3-for-3 outing that included one double and one walk. Franks was 1-for-2 with one double and two walks, while Bartels was 1-for-3 with one double.
Tix, who was 2-for-3 at the plate with one double, allowed five hits, one run, and two walks over 7.0 innings pitched. She notched three strikeouts in the complete-game win.
The Royals will face Mary Hardin-Baylor (DH) in Belton, Texas on Tuesday, March 17 at 1 p.m.
MEN'S TENNIS (8-1 Overall)
Bethel 7, St. Norbert 0
The doubles point belonged to Bethel thanks to a 6-1 win from Dylan Magistad/Carter Sheard at No. 1, and a 7-5 decision from Micah Gustafson/Zach Bengtson at No. 3.
Bethel dominated singles, which started with Carter Sheard's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. Magistad was victorious 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, as was Zack Chaffey 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 at No. 3. Watson Sheard prevailed at No. 3 singles by a 6-2, 6-3 margin. Rounding out the Royals victories was Kade Bishop 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Gustafson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Royals will face Springfield on Monday, March 16 at 7:30 a.m. (ET).
WOMEN'S TENNIS (7-0 Overall)
Bethel 6, William Smith 1
Bethel won doubles off a 6-3 decision from Lauryn Douglas/Michaella Sullivan at No. 1, and a 6-0 victory from Elisabeth Langhus/Payton Douglas at No. 3.
Douglas rolled that momentum into singles, where she came out on top 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Sullivan did too with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 2. Langhus prevailed 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Rounding out the Bethel victories was Malia McKinnon 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and Elzeda Walvatne 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
