Royals Rally Late, Fall 4-3 to No. 4 Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team battled back throughout Tuesday night's matchup against No. 4/2 Augsburg University, but fell just short in a 4-3 decision. The Royals showed grit and offensive push late, rallying in the third period before the Auggies held on for the win.

Augsburg struck first just 50 seconds into the game, grabbing an early lead. Bethel responded at 5:49 of the opening period, when Maddie Tinkle capitalized on an even-strength opportunity, set up by Myla Lubken, knotting the score at 1-1.

The teams traded goals in the second frame, with Augsburg reclaiming the lead before Rylen Kissell answered for Bethel at 17:17 of the period on an assist from Sophie Martin, sending the teams into the third tied 2-2.

Early in the final frame, Augsburg regained the lead on a power play goal, and added a second tally minutes later to make it 4-2. The Royals didn't back down, though, and Malia McKinnon brought the game back within reach with a late goal at 19:16. Assisted by Olivia Martin and Sophie Martin, the score closed to 4-3, but Bethel's final push fell short in the closing seconds.

Bethel goaltender Ashley Gustafson (Hess) made a busy 39 saves in the effort, keeping the Royals within striking distance throughout the contest. The faceoff circle was another strong area for Bethel, as McKinnon won 13 draws, helping the Royals control key possessions.

With the result, Bethel now turns its attention to its next challenge, looking to get back in the win column as MIAC play continues – at Gustuavus this Friday, Janurary 30th at 7pm.
