The reigning back-to-back MIAC Playoff champions start the quest to defend its title Thursday evening as the second-seeded Bethel baseball team opens up the MIAC Playoffs with third-seeded Saint John's. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at CHS Field in downtown St. Paul.

Game two of the tournament comes on Friday against the winner or loser of top-seeded St. Olaf and fourth-seeded Saint Mary's.

PLAYOFF HISTORY
• The Royals are making their fourth consecutive appearance in the playoff and 11th overall.
• BU holds an all-time record of 15-13 (.536) in the conference tournament.
•  It's the first time since 2018 that the Royals are the No. 2 seed. That season they won all three matchups including the MIAC Championship game 8-0 over top-seeded Saint John's. As the two seed they are 5-2 all-time.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• BU is 30-39 all-time against the Johnnies after a series split this year. The Johnnies have won three of the last four matchups and BU is 4-6 in the last 10.
• The Royals swept Saint Mary's at home behind a 3-0 shutout from
John Solfest and followed it with a 6-5 win in game two. Bethel holds a 36-27-1 all-time advantage on the Cardinals that includes a four-game winning streak and a 7-3 mark in the last 10.
• The Oles swept the Bethel at the halfway point of conference play. BU is 19-49 all-time versus St. Olaf and is 4-6 in the last 10 meetings.
ROYAL NOTES
• The Royals enter post-season play having won nine of their last 10. The lone loss was to UW-Stout, 11-5, to wrap up the regular season.
• Bethel ranks fourth in fielding percentage nationally with a MIAC-leading .978 mark.
• BU's pitching staff has tossed five shutouts this year. That leads the MIAC with St. Olaf and 16th nationally.
